This is a very yummy and easy to prepare cold dessert that my Granma used to give us every time we went to visit when we were children. Everyone in the family was always looking forward to it! 🍫 😋
- No heating required, but a freezer is needed! So, it is safe to prepare this dessert with your children.
- The recipe contains raw eggs and liquor, and the dough is not cooked. As such, please notice that this dessert is not suitable for pregnant women.
- 250 gr dry biscuits 🍪
- 200 gr sugar
- 100 gr dark cocoa powder
- 200 gr butter (without salt)
- 2 eggs
- liquor (e.g., white vermouth, saké, …)
- Oiled paper
Melt the butter and let it rest to reach room temperature. An easy way to melt butter is to have two bowls that can fit inside each other, put the butter in the small one and hot water between the two. Otherwise, a microwave is also an option. But, if you wat to do it the old way and use a pot, be careful not to burn it!
Crack the eggs open in a large bowl (large enough to contain all the ingredients!). Then, add the sugar and whip the whole thing until you obtain a homogeneous cream, possibly without any sugar crystals.
Slowly add the cocoa powder while mixing thoroughly to obtain a homogeneous cream with no cocoa crumbles. You might want to filter the cocoa powder while adding it to the cream to avoid adding crumbles.
Add the previously melted butter to the cream. Mix thoroughly until you obtain a homogeneous cream. NOTE: the butter should not be too hot or you risk of partially cooking the eggs!
Add a spoon of liquor to the cream and mix until it’s completely absorbed. The original recipe uses white vermouth, but japanese sake is a nice alternative.
Crush the cookies 🍪 into tiny crumbles (around 1 cm in side) and slowly add them to the dough, while mixing.
Lay the dough in the center of the oiled paper and shape it as a salame (without touching it, use the paper to help yourself).
Wrap up the paper around the dough and let it rest in the freezer for a couple of hours.
Serve cold ❄️, cut in ~1 cm thick slices, and enjoy! 😋
A few alternatives to this recipe, which are still extremely yummy, are:
- Adding a bit of coconut crumbles to the dough.
- Replacing 50 gr of biscuits with the same amount of corn flakes.
- Replacing 30 gr of cocoa powder with the same amount of Nutella or other hazelnut chocolate cream.
